One day, I woke up and saw a news article about #SaveMayowa movement, heavily pubicized by Toyin Aimakhu. A movement aimed at raising funds (#32m precisely), for the treatment of a 26 year old girl, Mayowa Ahmed. Who was suffering from Ovarian Cancer.
When I saw the photos and video attached, and I was told she was suffering from Ovarian Cancer, Stage 4 at the moment, I felt sorry for her. “No one deserves to suffer like this”, I said when I saw her before and after pictures.
At this point, you would understand that for her family to have reached out to a popular figure like Toyin Aimakhu, to help them pubicize their plight and raise funds, then they most have been desperately trying to do everything to save her life. No one loves to lose a loved one, and its worse when you see a loved one suffer before death. The young lady was battling for her life and she had family members who were willing to take a chance, any chance at all, to ensure that she survives.
Earlier today, our favorite blogger/Amebo, Linda Ikeji posted this on her blog, “…Mayowa is really sick. She truly has Ovarian cancer. She’s admitted at LUTH but she didn’t need money for surgery, because doctors had told Mayowa she was beyond treatment and no hospital in the world could treat her as she was extremely far gone. Mayowa had reached stage 4 and doctors, unfortunately, already told her family she won’t survive it and had advised them to take her home. Her family instead used her situation to raise money from Nigerians. The doctors in LUTH have also denied giving her family a medical report advising her to seek treatment abroad…” Hereby creating an air of uncertainty over the need to raise funds for Mayowa’s treatment at all.
She continued by saying, “Toyin Aimakhu, who was one of those who spearheaded the fundraising, as you read this, is at LUTH right now with police officers. Some people also went to the family’s home and the place is locked up”. This further heighten the anxiety of well wishers and donors across the nation.
This evening, Ahmed Mayowa’s sister Ahmed Mariam, told Pulse.NG that this is completely false. She said,”I don’t know why Toyin Aimakhu and Linda Ikeji are saying we are scamming Nigerians. It’s a lie! No doctor ever told us my sis cannot survive this they just told us to do something and take her out of the country. Nigerians we did not scam u ooo it’s a lie oo. Linda Ikeji has never been in this story and now she’s just cooking up everything to just”
She continued, “Right now my sis is in d room crying. I don’t know what Linda wants from us. It is true. she has ovarian cancer. We sent the medical report we posted everything on line. At least we posted everything online”
Actually, after going through the email correspondence above, it would be discovered that the family of Ms Mayowa were actually in contact with Emory Clinic (www.emoryhealthcare.org , the domain checks out) who are ranked 1st in Georgia and top 25 in the USA for Cancer treatment. So while the doctors may not have referred them to this establishment, they went ahead to try out for themselves, but they needed money, hence the #SaveMayowa movement was born. They must have raised the whole money by now and I hope Mayowa makes it. The family also released a statement
And for our dear Linda and Toyin, you guys really let me down on this one. A life is at stake, and all you are concerned about is if the family are trying to pull a fast one. We all saw they sick girl and if the family members are ruthless enough to try and pull a fast one even in this her state then they are really a callous bunch. But I sincerely doubt that. If on the other hand, they are simply trying to save a loved one and you are simply trying to have a filled day out of their misery, then remember, it could happen to anyone.
For all the Nigerians who gave their hard earned money to help save this poor girl’s life, then don’t worry. The Lord would not forget you, because out of the goodness of your heart, you have given to save a life. Do not let this deter you in future.
