OPINION: “I WILL BEAT YOU UP ON THIS FLOOR AND NOTHING WILL HAPPEN,”

“I will beat you up on this floor and nothing will happen,” was what “Honourable” member Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West told Senator Oluremi Tinubu, representing Lagos Central. Yes, why not? We all knew one day it would get to this! Nigeria is a country in poverty, yet spends so much to maintain one of the most expensive legislative systems in the world. And what we get in return is a member telling another man’s wife that he would “beat her up”, right there in the house and nothing would happen!

What really led to this drama? Ok, I remember. The Senate house summoned the Attorney General of the Federation to come and explain why and who gave him the right to sue the Senate leadership to court on the grounds of Forgery! Seriously, the only other thing, this ridiculous, I have heard in my life, was a 12 year old telling me that the Late Michael Jackson was white! How do you summon the plantiff? What gives you the right to call for the arrest of the Attorney General of the Federation for instituting a criminal suit against the House? Isn’t this insanity?

How does it sound, that in these difficult times, our broke nation is spending N200bn on a legislative house, where its okay to “beat up other people’s wives on the floor of the house and nothing will happen”. Such impunity!

Sahara Reporters report that, “The statement caused a commotion on the floor as Senators in her support gathered to protect her. Senate President Saraki nodded as Melaye called mrs. Tinubu unprintable names according to Senators who intervened to save her from the rampaging Melaye”! Yeah guys, The Senate President “NODDED”, happy to watch a Senator/another guy’s wife get beaten on the “Floor of the Senate” and watch how “nothing will happen”!

Talking of “Nothing will happen”, the lower house was involved in a brawl of sorts yesterday as they deliberated on if there should be an immunity clause for the Legislative leadership. This way, the leadership of the same Senate, where someone is threatening to beat up someone’s wife, and “Nothing will happen” would now be able to do so without persecution from the courts.

Apparently, the legislative arm has gone sideways, so when people say OccupyNASS, we can now see what they mean! Whatever happened to decency? By the singular statement “I will beat you up on this floor and nothing will happen,” Senator Dino Melaye not only degraded his personality, he also brought the house to total disrepute!
